INTERNET BASICS The Internet is maybe the most creative invention ever conceived in changing how people live their lives. Since its development is still in its infancy, the long term effects on society as a whole are not known. What is the Internet in its most simple terms? It is a tool that allows information to be accessed, viewed and listened to using text, pictures, and sound on a video display and/or speakers. What makes it different from a TV program is that the user can select the time and type of information he wishes to access as well as selecting the method for viewing or listening to it. One of the tools that makes this possible is a "Search Engine". Simply stated, the user can enter any word or expression on the search engine query line, and the search engine searches through literally millions of pages of data to locate the occurences of that word or expression. It then lists these occurences in some form of pre-determined ordered format, normally a link, on your video display. You then choose the link you wish to view or listen to. The Internet has evolved from a slow page display to almost instant page display with excellent video and sound quality. Because of this capability, the computer has also evolved into an enterainment center. You can watch DVD movies, listen to classical and modern music, copy video and music files onto DVDs and CDs.
